“The fact that award winning mas maker Brian Mc Farlane’s Africa landed on the covers of every front page newspaper last Sunday was no accident.

Mc Farlane  had agonised about whether  his proposed launch at 5:30 am would mean a media no show. He was  also concerned about what day of the week would be  suitable to host his p

In a series of meetings I advised that since the media thrives on the freshness of news, the fact that his launch was a press event only; that the media would be shuttled to a secret location and that the pitch letters conveyed a sense of excitement were huge plusses.

I also proposed having a press launch on Saturday.  No one likes an  exciting photo opportunity more than the media and for sure any work  that the two-time winner of coveted Band of the Year title puts forward would have plenty Kodak moments.

The fact that over 50 dancers, singers and drummers presenting   19 costumes in a forested location would not fail to disappoint.

On Saturday 11th at 5:30 am over 25 journalists assembled at a Chaguaramas car park and were shuttled to a charming  old house for an African breakfast, later they  endured a short trek to the Edith Waterfall trails  for  the presentation of Mc Farlane’s  “Africa, Her People, Her Glory, her Tears.”

At the end of it all, Brain asked: “Do you think we’ll get a front page on Sunday Judette.”

I smiled when I hit the newspaper stands 24 hours later and saw the pictures and stories from the media launch plastered on pages 1 and 2 of every daily.

No amount of money can pay for that kind of publicity. Were the electronic media able to capture the event as well, or was the trek and logistics of hookup too much for them? No doubt, Brian and his team would have filmed this exciting presentation so that we can all see what transpired. Then again, perhaps not seeing all of what took place, could create the mystique and intrigue that i am sure he wants to create. The drawings of the costumes look fantastic, every last one, i am sooooooo tempted!

Giselle, it wasn't live so the electronic press didn't have much logistics to deal with, plus cameras are so much smaller today than when I started out in media.

We had full TV coverage, after the short hike, the electronic press was taken back to the village parlour (which had been transformed into an African hut) for interviews, soundbites etc. We got 100 % coverage from all invited media, 3 features stories and 3 TV news stories

Oh and we invited the popular Carnival bloggers who also gave great coverage

One final note, go ahead and be tempted about playing mas, I think Brian is the band to experience. See you on the road!
