Maybe the way to compete is simply not to run the race

The word competition  comes from Latin and literally mean “seeking together” or “choosing to run the same race”.

But in the age of abundance the tracks got pretty crowded.

Others continuously stepped on your toes, elbowed  and pushed you in order to get to the customers first.

And then this revolutionary thought; maybe the way to win is not to compete.

I know. I know.  It's a paradox.

But listen, as soon as you  start running alongside  others in your pursuit of mindshare, market-share, beauty-share - whatever, you run the  risk being one of the crowd.

Invisible.

Meaningless.

The dirty little secret of market capitalism in all its forms is that successful companies have become so by killing the spirit of free enterprise. They have all succeeded in creating monopolies at least for a short moment in time. Competitiveness comes not from competing. Success arises from being different. And then being prepared to change again.

Why be the one competing? Start your own race! All that needs to be done is to find out what humanity needs to improve and supply the solution to that need.

This is what is coined - Blue Ocean Strategy -creating a market space of your own. Excellent ideology. Excellent reading... the authors cite cirque du soleil as a great example of this.... If you want to be a success, make sure not to dive into Red Oceans!

What great comments. Thanks.

What actually got me thinking about leading and having your own economic and emotional space was a hashtag practice they have on Twitter. It's called #ff, meaning Follow Friday and every Friday lots of people use the hashtag to recommend folks whose Twitter streams they think are worth following.

After months of looking on, observing how it works I decided to jump in but somehow it didn't feel right, not that the people I recommended weren't great, they were. But the act made me one of the herd and I enjoy Twitter more for the individual perspectives.

But it got me thinking of my own personality too, it's been defined as take charge and I admit I like forming my own kind of races, I guess that's why I became an entrepreneur and created a small blue ocean of my own.
